St John Ambulance is an NGO based in the UK that mobilizes volunteers to provide healthcare and first aid services at events, as well as offers first aid training. The organization lacks a centralized platform for volunteers to easily book shifts and foster a sense of community.

The challenge for St John Ambulance was to develop a POC for an app that could effectively utilize the existing organizational data. This required close collaboration between UX design and solution architecture.

Discover

Product vision

The project began with a workshop involving user interviews with volunteers. Ten volunteers were asked questions about their expectations and needs from St John Ambulance. Following that, a workshop with St John Ambulance's employees was conducted to understand the organization's vision and data. Based on the gathered insights, three Personas and their Empathy Maps were created. Subsequently, a product roadmap was mapped out to provide direction for design.

Define

Personas and Empathy Maps

The three personas represent distinct volunteer profiles: a young cadet seeking experience and peer connection, a new fundraiser balancing skill-building with fitting in, and a seasoned member focused on community involvement and advocacy despite tech frustrations. Each demonstrates different needs and challenges, reflecting their stage of involvement and priorities within the organization.

Develop

MVP scope

This MVP scope outlines the essential features for an initial product release centered on user account management, operational status, and volunteering opportunities.

It focuses on three main user goals:

  1. Account management — allowing users to create, link, and log into their accounts, and verify personal and operational details.

  2. Opportunity browsing — enabling users (First Aiders) to view, filter, and register for relevant volunteering events, with AI-assisted event categorization and role matching.

  3. Communication — providing access to key contacts such as unit managers.

Supporting components include middleware for data handling and analytics to track performance and engagement.

Design

Wireframes and design

The process of designing the POC involved a robust collaboration between me, the UX Designer, and the information architect. Leveraging insights from a data perspective, I designed flows and features achievable with the current data. Following that, in response to the client's request, I crafted a more visually appealing version to showcase the potential look of the app
